So if summer is a time when things slow down a bit for you, it can be a wonderful opportunity to crack open a new book (remember reading?) or press play on those documentaries you’ve been hoarding in your Netflix queue.
That’s why the zivaTEAM put our heads together to brainstorm some suggested reading and watching during the season of sun.

For when you want to tap into your creativity: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Lovers of Eat, Pray, Love, rejoice! Elizabeth Gilbert wrote this book which will delight anyone who wants to access their creativity a bit more easily without that fear that can accompany it. She shares her wisdom, busting myths about the creative process and how you can make it work for you more elegantly. Regardless of your occupation, this book will help you become a better writer, which is something that’s important for every job.
For when you wanna get your woo woo on: Inner Worlds, Outer Worlds
There’s a vibrational field that connects all things and it’s been called everything from Akasha, Logos, the primordial OM, the Higgs field, and beyond. This documentary dives into this concept and explores the very thing that connects our inner and outer worlds. It also touches on cymatics, the science of sound. This explains how certain sounds have different effects on the body (the scientific explanation for why our Ziva mantras are so powerful!). It’s a great movie for when you want to explore your spiritual self and how you connect with all that is.
For when you want to transform your identity: The Alter Ego Effect by Todd Herman
Written by our friend, Todd Herman, this book is a must have tool in your high-performance tool box. After coaching Olympians and heros in nearly every field, Todd wrote this book to show us how we can achieve our wildest dreams by tapping into the imagination that fueled our childhood games. By cultivating your secret identity, you can overcome resistance so you can show up as your most successful self.
For when you want to marvel at nature and feel inspired to take action: Our Planet
This documentary is a powerful look at the Earth and how climate change is affecting all living creatures. It can be tough to watch at points, but overall it displays our beautiful planet and how important it is that we take action to save it. This should be required watching for every human.
For when you’re feeling confused about nutrition: In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
Hands up if you’re confused about what you should be eating. I know — it can be so frustrating. In this book, Michael explores the Western diet and comes to a simple conclusion on how to eat well: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Highly recommend this book for all eaters of food. 😉
For when you need to choose courage over comfort: Brené Brown: The Call to Courage
Brené Brown is a total powerhouse and her glory is on full display in this Netflix special. She speaks beautifully on how to use your vulnerability to tap into your courage even amidst fear and uncertainty. Plus, she uses her undeniable wit and profound wisdom to keep you engaged the entire time. This is a must-see, folks.
For when you just want a good novel: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
An oldie but a goodie, this book is perfect for lazing on the beach. It’s about two Jewish cousins and their adventures in NYC before, during and after World War II. It’s a page-turner and so full of life you won’t want to put it down.
For when you’re feeling philosophical: The Good Place
What happens when you get to the afterlife and are being praised for your outstanding life, only to realize that you’ve been sent to the wrong place? This show is so joyful and thought-provoking — and will get you thinking about some engaging metaphysical concepts. Binge this on a day when you’re feeling a touch existential.
For when you want to become your best and brightest you: Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher
You didn’t really think I’d leave this one out, did you? I am blown away by the impact my book has had on so many people. It’s a bestseller (over 35,000 copies sold!).
