Did you know that May 7 is Teacher Appreciation Day? At Ziva, we have so much respect for teachers around the globe, who spend their days serving others and enriching this planet. We’ve been blessed with so many teachers who helped shape who we are. And today is a reminder of everything that we owe to these superheros.
Teachers are the ultimate givers who have dedicated their professions to spreading knowledge and upleveling their communities. But managing the care and energy of so many people can take a toll on your well-being — and you can’t pour from an empty cup. However, there are ways that teachers can alleviate the stress of handling so many demands.
We want to share with you a story of someone in our tribe who is using meditation to uplevel her performance in her elementary school classroom. Mary McCabe learned the Z Technique from my book, Stress Less, Accomplish More — and she has quite the story to share about how her time in the chair has been affecting her work performance. Read on for how Mary uses meditation to fill herself up so she can show up fully and better serve her students.
Teacher Highlight: Mary McCabe
How long have you been a teacher?
I have been teaching for 16 years.
How long have you been practicing the Z technique?
I have been practicing the 3M’s 2X a day for 2 months.
How has your daily meditation practice affected your work performance?
I have noticed many positive effects. Right away, I felt more creative. I have been spontaneously making my lessons more fun and engaging for the students by including music, drama, humor, and art. I have also been much more efficient with my time. I’ve been inspired to take on tasks, like organizing an area of the classroom, that I have put off for years. Most importantly, I have felt more present when working with my students and colleagues. I can see clearly where I want my energy to go and what I want to accomplish.
What other benefits of a twice daily practice have you noticed?
I have noticed some interesting coincidences. For example, I have been contemplating positions of administration and leadership. While thinking about this, several people have encouraged me to pursue these roles and I have been invited to participate in opportunities that would help me advance my position. In my daily life, the best benefits of meditation are increased energy, weight loss, and clarity of mind. The practice has helped me approach each new day with anticipation and curiosity.
What would you say to someone else who was on the fence about beginning a daily meditation practice?
I would say, “Wouldn’t you like to meet your very best self?”
