Have you ever said these things before?

  • I can’t sit still long enough to meditate.
  • I’ve tried to meditate but can’t clear my mind.
  • I’ve done meditation apps but never noticed a difference

You’re not alone. I hear these every single day.

People think that meditation is something you should magically already know how to do. But like any other skill it takes training. It also takes a technique made for you and not a monk.

You wouldn’t expect yourself to speak Japanese before ever taking a course. Why expect to master the skill of meditation by just closing your eyes and hoping for the best?

Yes, there’s a lot of free meditation apps out there. Most of them are guiding you through mindfulness exercises and calling it meditation. That’s why your sittings probably go something like this.

You close your eyes. Think about a snack. Back to the breath. Think about a snack again. Get a snack. That’s it… you must be a meditation failure.

If this is you I have good news, Friend — you are not a meditation failure.

The mind thinks involuntarily, just like the heart beats involuntarily. So using the quantity of your thoughts as a gauge for how “good” you’re doing at meditation is a terrible way to judge your progress.
