Are you addicted to TRYING?

“Do or do not. There is no try." -Yoda

In the famous words of Yoda, “Do or do not. There is no try”.

Trying is defined as “making an attempt or effort to do something”. Are you trying to be successful? Trying to get in shape? Trying to meditate? If the answer is yes, Congratulations! You’ve made it. It’s happening now. You are currently succeeding at trying.

The thing is, though, trying is not enough. A tree doesn’t try to grow, it just grows. A flower doesn’t try to open, it just opens. Don’t try; do.

As a meditation teacher, I’m fascinated by how many people try to meditate. They apply the same level of control and effort to their practice as they do their career. They usually end up frustrated and quitting unless they have an experienced teacher to guide them through and teach them how to surrender. We westerners are not practiced in the art of surrendering. We think it means giving up or is a sign of weakness, but nothing could be further from the truth.
